Authenticity flags

  • The Wagyu is sold under one farm name, Raines Farm, with no published breed classification such as fullblood, purebred or F1 and no carcass grade. Ask at the counter if those details matter to you.
  • A lot of what the shop labels Wagyu is value added rather than whole steaks, including burgers, sausage and frozen ready meals, and the same case also carries beef that is not Wagyu, such as Prime Angus. Check the label on what you are buying.
  • The shop has no working website of its own. Hours, stock and specials are announced only on its Facebook page, so call ahead before making the drive.

Why it's listed

The Flora Butcher is an old world style butcher shop on Main Street in the small town of Flora, northwest of Jackson, open Tuesday to Saturday. Its whole beef programme is built on a single named herd: Raines Farm Wagyu, raised in Louisiana by the family of owner and chef David Raines. The case runs to Wagyu steaks, house ground Wagyu burgers, house made Wagyu sausage and frozen Wagyu ready meals, alongside game birds, local artisan groceries and craft beer. Everything is bought at the counter; there is no mail order.

01

A whole-animal butcher that names one farm

The Flora Butcher is an old-world style counter in Flora, a small town north of Jackson, built around local animals and local artisan products. What earns it a place here is that it names its Wagyu supplier rather than describing it: the beef comes from Raines Farm, a large herd at Monroe in northeast Louisiana, which is listed on this site in its own right.

A named producer is the whole standard on this pillar. Most butchers describe Wagyu by grade, by country or by nothing at all, and a counter that tells you whose cattle you are buying has answered the only question that cannot be answered later.

02

The website is a dead end and the shop is not

Anyone searching for this business will land on a parked domain, the kind a registrar serves when a site has lapsed. The shop is trading normally: it posts through the summer, carries hundreds of reviews, and its supplier relationship is stated in its own words.

That gap is worth naming because it is a common way a good small business disappears from the internet without closing. A parked page is a billing lapse, not a shuttered door, and it is not evidence of anything about the counter.

03

Nothing ships

There is no e-commerce at all here, so this is a listing for people who can reach central Mississippi. It also sits inside a regional pattern worth knowing: the Deep South raises a great deal of Wagyu and eats very little of it, and this counter is one of the few places in the region where a local herd reaches a local customer directly rather than being sold out of state.
