Michael Schulson's bi-level izakaya in Midtown Village, a cocktail lounge upstairs over an intimate candlelit sushi bar and robatayaki room below, open from 4pm daily with a walk-in happy hour until 7pm. One menu covers both floors. Four Wagyu dishes run across it: Grilled Japanese Wagyu at $76, a Wagyu Bavette at $29, a Wagyu soup dumpling at $13, and Wagyu on the robata. The kitchen states that the $76 dish is Japanese but names no prefecture, farm or grade for any of them. Two further items are sold as Kobe, a nigiri at $17 a piece and a $13 robata skewer, and the restaurant is not licensed by the official Kobe Beef association. Both Kobe items are priced far below the kitchen's own unbranded Japanese Wagyu, so read them as Wagyu of undisclosed origin.
Authenticity flags
- Two items here are sold as Kobe, an A-5 Kobe nigiri at $17 a piece and a kobe beef robata skewer at $13. This restaurant is not licensed by the official Kobe Beef association in Japan. The pricing argues against the claim from inside the menu itself: the kitchen charges $76 for a dish it simply calls Grilled Japanese Wagyu, and Kobe is a narrow and more expensive subset of Japanese Wagyu, not a cheaper one. The $13 skewer also sits in the ordinary robata list beside ribeye at $9 and short rib at $10.
- The Grilled Japanese Wagyu at $76 is stated to be Japanese but no prefecture, farm or grade is given for it, and the Wagyu bavette and Wagyu soup dumpling name no country at all. Ask where the beef comes from if provenance matters to you.
