The prefecture
Miyazaki sits on the southeastern coast of Kyushu, Japan's warm southern island, and is a major Japanese Black production area. Its Miyazakigyu brand is administered by the Miyazaki Wagyu Council, known in Japanese as the Better Miyazaki Beef Production Council. Current herd rankings should be checked against a dated livestock census rather than treated as a permanent brand fact.
The prefecture's herd was built after the Second World War, when cattle numbers in Miyazaki rose sharply and breeders developed a mating and selection system of their own. That work produced the sire lines the prefecture still names as the foundation of its reputation, among them Yasuhira and Itohide.
What the Miyazakigyu name requires
Miyazakigyu is a prefecture-wide standard rather than a single farm's recipe. To carry the name, beef must come from Japanese Black cattle born and raised in Miyazaki Prefecture and reach a meat quality grade of 4 or 5, the top two rungs of the Japanese scale. Cattle raised in the prefecture that fall below that bar are still sold honestly, under broader labels such as Miyazaki Wagyu or Miyazaki-raised beef, without the Miyazakigyu brand.
The brand is protected in Japan both as a regional collective trademark and under the Geographical Indication system, where it was registered as GI number 55 on 15 December 2017. Japan's agriculture ministry describes the beef in that registration as showing fine-grained marbling with a subtle sweetness and a rich aroma.
The standard establishes breed, origin, and a quality-grade floor; it does not make every farm, cut, or carcass identical. Muneharu Ozaki separately markets Ozaki Beef under his own name rather than the Miyazakigyu brand.
The competition record
Miyazaki's international reputation rests substantially on the National Competitive Exhibition of Wagyu, the event held once every five years and widely called the Wagyu Olympics. Miyazaki has taken the Prime Minister's Award in the meat cattle division at four consecutive exhibitions: Tottori in 2007, Nagasaki in 2012, Miyagi in 2017, and Kagoshima in 2022. The prefecture describes that run as the first of its kind in the competition's history.
It is worth understanding what that award is and is not. The exhibition judges cattle across nine divisions and issues separate top honors for breeding cattle and for meat cattle, alongside a separate overall team result for each prefecture. Miyazaki's streak is specifically in the meat cattle division. At the same 2017 exhibition where Miyazaki won that division, Oita took the breeding cattle honor and neighboring Kagoshima won the overall team championship, so more than one prefecture can accurately claim a win from a single year.
Miyazakigyu and Kobe compared
Both are Japanese Black Wagyu graded on the same national scale, and neither is a grade of the other. Kobe is a much narrower designation: eligible Tajima cattle born, raised, and slaughtered in Hyogo Prefecture, limited to bullocks and uncalved heifers, requiring BMS 6 or higher, meat quality grade 4 or 5, yield grade A or B, and a carcass weight of 499.9 kilograms or less, all certified by the Kobe Beef Marketing and Distribution Promotion Association. Miyazakigyu asks for Japanese Black birth and raising in Miyazaki and a meat quality grade of 4 or 5.
The practical consequence is that each name covers a range rather than a single quality point. Kobe begins at BMS 6 and runs to the top of the scale, and Miyazakigyu begins at grade 4. A Miyazakigyu cut graded A5 with a high marbling score can therefore be more marbled than a Kobe cut sitting at the bottom of the Kobe standard. The grade printed alongside the brand name tells you more than the brand name by itself.
Brand alone does not establish which item will cost more in the United States. Compare the same cut, grade, BMS, weight, shipping basis, seller, and date; a brand premium is a market observation, not a measured difference in eating quality.
What it costs in the United States
Miyazakigyu pricing varies sharply by cut, BMS, portion size, retailer, exchange rate, and shipping. Restaurant per-ounce prices are not directly comparable with raw retail prices because they include service and preparation. Use the comparison method in our Wagyu price guide rather than treating a fixed range here as current.
How to order it with confidence
On a U.S. menu or retail label, look for the Miyazakigyu name together with Miyazaki origin and a Japanese grade. Japanese cattle are covered by an individual-identification and traceability system; public disclosure of origin and grade gives the customer more to verify than a generic "Japanese Wagyu" claim.
Treat the brand name alone with more caution than the grade. Because Miyazakigyu spans grades 4 and 5, a seller who can quote the grade, and ideally the marbling score, is telling you something the brand name does not. A vague "Miyazaki style" claim with no origin or grade attached is worth a question.
Common questions
- Is Miyazaki Wagyu the same as Kobe beef?
- No. Both are Japanese Black Wagyu, but Kobe is Tajima-lineage cattle from Hyogo Prefecture that meet a separate, stricter standard, while Miyazakigyu comes from Miyazaki Prefecture in Kyushu. They are different regional brands graded on the same national scale.
- Has Miyazaki really won the Wagyu Olympics?
- Yes. Miyazaki has taken the Prime Minister's Award in the meat cattle division at four consecutive National Competitive Exhibitions of Wagyu: 2007, 2012, 2017, and 2022. The prefecture describes that run as a first in the competition's history. Other prefectures win other divisions at the same events, so several can claim a win from one year.
- What does the Miyazakigyu label actually guarantee?
- That the beef is Japanese Black, born and raised in Miyazaki Prefecture, and graded 4 or 5 for meat quality. It is a prefecture-wide standard certified by the Miyazaki Wagyu Council and registered under Japan's Geographical Indication system in December 2017.
- What does Miyazaki Wagyu cost in the United States?
- There is no durable single price. Compare the same cut, weight, grade, BMS, and shipping basis, and check the date. Restaurant per-ounce prices include preparation and service and should not be compared directly with raw retail price per pound.
- Is Ozaki Beef the same as Miyazakigyu?
- No, though both come from Miyazaki. Muneharu Ozaki sells his cattle under his own name instead of the Miyazakigyu brand. The beef is still graded on the Japanese scale and typically sold as A4 or A5.
